When a new family moves in next door, Kim is excited that she will get to make a new friend. She meets Ellie, a young girl who is deaf, meaning she cannot hear very well and that she speaks using sign language.

At first, Kim has trouble talking with Ellie since she doesn't know sign language. Kim decides to teach herself how to sign so that she can properly communicate with Ellie and make her new friend feel right at home.
